Nick Griffin & The White Pride Flag

Nick Griffin has been snapped hugging two blokes at a demo in Liverpool, but the pic has the left in uproar because those two men are holding a flag with an Odin’s Cross (AKA White Pride cross) emblazoned across the front.

This has sparked some discussion amongst nationalists, specifically on whether Griffin actually cares about appearing moderate any more.

Patrick Harrington has told us that his plans for the BNP match those he had for his National Front faction back in the 80s. This means that they won’t care how many members they lose, as long as those members are loyal to the leader.

Harrington has no qualms about sacrificing size and influence for internal conformity amongst the membership. He has openly stated this.

In addition, I have previously written about the ‘managed decline’ of the BNP, which the restructuring of the membership packages represents. Harrington’s desire to scale down operations fits in perfectly with the party’s natural decline.

However deluded the former ‘Political Soldiers’ appear to be, they can’t honestly believe that Griffin stands a chance of being re-elected up in the North West Euro constituency.

No gold-plated pension for Griffin, this leaves him with a problem. He’s going to be 55-years-old when he leaves the European Parliament, still young enough, I’m sure he believes, to run what’s left of the BNP in 2014.

I’ve long believed that Griffin views the BNP as his own family business, and will hold onto it for as long as possible, possibly into his 80s, similar to Jean Marie Le Pen.

Perhaps Griffin is now going to appeal to the pre 1999 membership, he knows that these are the people who will stick around regardless of the party’s electoral standing. They’re easier to please, because they only half believe in electoral politics. They like the idea of one man leadership under the fuhrerprinzip (and no, that’s not a dig at them, they actually do like it.). They’re perfect for Griffin and Harrington’s new ‘streamlined’ BNP.

They’re racial nationalists, and there’s about 2,000 of them. 2,000 is around the core membership of the BNP, you can still run it and pay salaries on a membership of 2,000. Especially under Griffington’s new membership structure.

So if Griffin is indeed going to wind back the clock and claim to be a racial nationalist, he probably won’t be bothered with the photo above or with trying to appear moderate.

The whole moderate image that the BNP tried to project, was solely for electoral reasons, if you’re not going to contest elections, then you can be as hardcore as you like, within the law. Which bring me onto my next point.

In a recent video, Griffin hints that the way forward is via campaigning, not via electoral politics. This is convenient, because the hardcore racial nationalists aren’t all that bothered with elections anyway. You don’t want people like me, because we’re a pain in the arse. We expect results.

You can see the pieces starting to come together.

Through natural decline and whittling, the BNP is going to be left with around 2,000 members, back to the level it was when Griffin took over.  They will want ideological conformity, so the easiest section to fool and keep fooled are the racial nationalists. They won’t concentrate on elections, but will instead hold demonstrations and campaigns – a perfect fit for the type of member it will have.

It’s back to the Tyndall era.

I recall saying in the summer of 2010 that the BNP would survive despite all the reports of its imminent death and that the party that came out at the end of it would be a repository for those people not capable of coming to terms with the late 1950’s let alone the 21st century. Actually, it was one of those rare moments I lost my rag and I said it Emma West style, but the gist was the same.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. It gives a place for them all to go and it keeps them off the streets as the saying goes. Actually the opposite is true as it looks like it’ll put them on the streets: I wonder how they’ll get to make their voices heard when the EDL can probably put ten times as many on the streets. It’s got to be a risky strategy for Griffo, but I suppose there’s not much else left for him.

It is also a clear opportunity for BF to put clear blue water between the BNP image of nationalism which many people still have and the reality of the new nationalism of the 21st century. What better way to say “look, we’re not like the BNP” than to be ‘not the BNP’ (if you get my drift). It’s also good that BF is the only serious nationalist British party to have a leader that was not formerly a BNP member.

    Er …. that’s it ….!

Very much agree, Dowlish. It will act as a repository.

The Nat Front looks to be taking a few members on, wonder if they'll manage to sort it out.

I do hate the phrase white pride, it's so American. The sun wheel has been around since the stone age. It's a popular symbol throughout European Nationalism. Please don't tie it to white pride and the 14 word stuff.

I agree with your "managed decline" comments though. It's all suspiciously like the decline of the National Front who were at one time genuinely the fourth most popular party in the UK. I always wonder if these far right declines are somehow orchestrated by our political enemies working from within.

I don't think they are, Florian, if you look back, there's two figures involved in the decline of both the National Front and the BNP – Harrington and Griffin.

We're our own worst enemy at times.

You are probably right, depressing though it is. I just wish we'd see a structured, united whole instead of all these splintered groups. There are quite a lot of us after all.

Me too. History dictates that we probably will see an amalgamation at some point, but we've got to endure the turmoil first.
